Where Am I? – Read Psalm 118:1-2, 19-29
Last year I visited the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and saw a huge painting, The Entry of Christ into Chicago in 1976 by Roger Brown. The pictured city teems with life, with people working, talking, eating, and dancing. Into the midst of this, Jesus rides on the back of a flatbed truck toward a speaker's platform. Local dignitaries wait there for him. Fewer than one hundred people have gathered. One lone woman stands in the street, waving a single palm branch.
I bought a postcard of this painting and put it on my desk at work, wondering where I would be in this scenario. Would I be a part of the religious and political establishment, preparing to welcome the latest celebrity coming to town? Would I be one of the crowd, curious about Jesus? Would I go on about the routine of my life? Would I even know Jesus was there? And if I did, would I care? Or could I possibly be the one woman faithfully waving the palm branch?
The truth is, I might be anyone in the painting. Each day I can choose to serve God or seek to serve my own self-interest. What about you? How are you attentive to "the one who comes in the name of the Lord"?
